The class that allows every student to be themselves, weather it's creating a video advertisement, or writing a short essay about current news and journalists. Introduction to Journalism. Mrs.Fought (mostly seventh but a little of eighth grade) helps kids learn how to be a journalist at Hilliard Memorial Middle School. On October 27 just two days after being introduced the students are conducting interviews and starting the project. The project is an article, but one with quotes, interviews, and a professional feel. I have chosen two students to track for this assignment, Ethan McMillan and Josie Harsfield. Both students can be hard workers and goof off depending on the situation, Ethan will work if he isn't distracted and Josie will work but not as fast. For the project I recorded videos of the students to get the best way of seeing how they work with ought me asking them. I have asked several other students in the class there topics there it was a wide variety. Jorge, the student that sits in front of me says he's taking the story (soda club) because he wants to stay opposed to drugs and alcohol. Another student, Sam said in a hotdog costume, he was doing the holiday band concert. It seams that the students are all doing topics related to them in some way or the other. As I further my study on October 31, Halloween the students are working as well as having fun. November 1st, after taking staff videos for Mrs.Fought we came back to peace time. Her methods may not be conventional, but the students have there opportunities to relax in her classroom. My research shows that both of our students being studied work a decent amount without being stressed. Several videos can say that Josie is working more than Ethan, but I don't think so. I believe Ethan is working, but with constant interruptions, Josie does work but not fast. I decided that I had to do it sometime so November 1st was the day to interview Mrs.Fought finally. Before I interviewed Ethan and Josie professionally I had to interview her because of my questions. She said she loved Ethan he was awesome, her journalism class has a more professional feel to her. She likes both classes the same but journalism will always have a place in her heart. In my interview with Ethan he was exited with what Mrs.Fought said about him and when I asked about Josie he said" I mean I don't really know her... HEY JOSIE ARE YOU NICE?? JUST SAY YOUR NICE. OKAY THANKS. Yeah Jake she's nice. " Josie's interviews didn't contribute much as she just basically said she didn't know Ethan and that she liked Language Arts or Social Studies. Ethan was not at school Monday, November 6th and we did not have school Tuesday so I will have to finish up my study with him in Wednesday and now I will be forced to finish up my story on Josie. She can work great as long as she has a companion and stress relief for it. If there is a hard deadline or no time to chill she gets too stressed and can't work. But her learning style is that she needs to talk and smile and have some fun to get work done. Mrs. Fought understands this more than most teachers because unlike most teachers she was in the middle school scene not that long ago and understands what students need. Josie when exposed to an environment Mrs. Fought gives, there are times the class can have a silent work period and get a lot of work done. This is why Josie will have her project finished. Otherwise she wouldn't get a great job done or at least her best work. My theory is that this class thrives on no stress and it functions well even if the class may have to get a day to literal chill out and get a chance to sleep. I went around and asked where everyone was, if they were done, close to done, halfway, or not even close. It was about half and half of flak most done and close to done and one not close at all.(42%halfway done, 56% close to done and 4% not even close to done) Ethan McMillan. I followed him closely mainly because he sat next to me during this project. I have several recordings of him working and several of him not. But overall Ethan is smarter then he acts, he gets work done but you don't notice it's done or he's working because he's easily distracted. My conclusion of him is that teachers need to give him quiet time away from everyone but also a couple minutes to screw around and have his fun or else he will do it without telling his teacher. I enjoyed this project and learned about learning styles of two students also about things I never realized about Mrs.Fought and her teaching styles.
